There are four basic types of stabilizers. Cutaway, Tear-away, Heat-away and Wash-away
The names comes from the method used to remove them from fabric once the embroidery is completed. Cutaways usually remain permanently affixed to the fabric, while tear-aways, heat or melt-away, and wash-away are removed when the embroidery is finished.
There are various weights and forms of stabilizer--fusible, nonfusible, and adhesive backed which makes it more confusing.
Your choice of stabilizer depends on your fabric, the nature of your design, and the end use. The denser the stitch count, the sturdier your stabilizer needs to be.
Your best bet is to experiment with various products to find the best results for your project. Make test samples with your fabric, label and keep these samples for future reference. You may need to use several layers and more than one type in your project.
